Boudoir for the Modest – Musings from Long Island’s Boudoir Photographer Susan Eckert

For many women the thought of standing nearly naked in front of anyone is…warning, what follows is a wild understatement…stressful.

Some of us wives even hide from our hubbies, scurrying to dress before he enters, or double-checking locked doors before we jump into the shower. So, the thought of standing before a woman with camera in hand? Well, let’s just write that off as uh, a NEVER! Right?

Well, not so fast! Every woman wants to feel sexy, no? I believe they do. And sexy is all a matter of how YOU yourself define it. For this reason, I take a very broad approach to my boudoir photography. Some images might be more in line with glamour, some fashion-leaning, and others classic or fine art in style. But the point is, my client defines her look, her style, and her comfort level.

One style I’ve absolutely come to love is the oversize sweater look. Yes, you heard right! For boudoir! Absolutely! In fact I’ve even seen a really hot shot where a model was wearing stockings and….a turtleneck! Made me expand my idea about what’s sexy and beautiful.

Now don’t get me wrong, not any old sweater will work. Grandma’s patchwork sweater? Probably not so hot. Bottom line – it all comes down to what you want to emphasize, and what you wish to leave to the imagination, shall we say? For example, if you have great legs, a shorter sweater that’s bottom-skimming but reveals all the glory of your long legs will be a total win. Great stomach? Try an open cardigan, giving a hint at a pair of adorable undies and a nice tummy to offer a tantalizing peek. Great cleavage? A long v-neck sweater with long sleeves that fall off one shoulder might do the trick.

Above all, regardless of what you choose to wear for your boudoir shoot, wear it with confidence because as the women I’ve worked with know–it’s your greatest must-have accessory! Frankly you could wear saran wrap – and so long as you wear it with panache – who’s gonna focus on the saran wrap? (Just don’t ask me how I know this! :P)
